September 5-8

 Welcome to our Grade 1 blog where we highlight our learning and celebrate our discoveries.  This week in our grade one community we read the book Our Class is a Family, as we begin to build our understanding of community within our classroom, the roles and responsibilities each of us have, and how our actions contribute to a place of kindness and respect.  Together we read and discussed what we noticed about the book and made connections to the dynamics we wish to create in our learning space.

  Dear Parents, I hope that everyone is enjoying the spring weather this long weekend!  Read below to hear about our week! Reminders: As a reminder, we will be going to the Leighton Art Centre on Monday April 22 for the whole day.   The Leighton Art Centre is located 30 mins outside the city limits.  The weather conditions are slightly different at the art centre compared to in the city.  Currently, there is still snow on the ground and temperatures are often cooler.  Please send your child dressed in layers(t-shirt, sweater, jacket), hat, mittens, jacket, and boots that will keep their feet warm and dry.  It is recommended that you pack an extra pair of socks and change of clothes in case it is needed.  As well, we will be active all day!  Please pack a sizeable snack, full leakproof water bottle, and lunch for your child.   Social Studies This week we have been building our background knowledge and learning about the founders...

This week was jam-packed with lots of exciting learning opportunities.  Here is a peek at some of the learning from this week.   Pink Shirt Day Needle Felting with Grade 6 Buddies We had the opportunity to work with our grade 6 buddies to build a beautiful representation of friendship and to mark Pink Shirt Day.  Thanks to our Student Voice who started this initiative, students in grade 1 and grade 6 partnered up to draw a heart, transfer it to felt square and then using roving wool and a felting needle created a quilted square that will be joined with others to create a friendship quilt.   Tea cher’s Pet Thank you to our amazing parent volunteers that were able to join us for this in-school experience.  Students investigated energy and built their understanding of direction, pathway, and speed of moving objects and animals. December 4-7 Math - Repeating Patterns

  For the last few weeks we have been building our understanding of patterns by looking at patterns and cycles found in our everyday life, creating our own patterns with different elements, extending and translating patterns using a variety of materials.  The following is a summary of the key ideas and concepts we have been learning. Learning Intentions I can recognize cycles encountered in daily routines and nature. I can identify the pattern core, up to four elements, in a cycle.
