December 1 - Grade 1 Field Trip to the Science Centre 






We had an amazing day at the Science Centre on Thursday.  For many students, it was their first field trip and opportunity to even ride a school bus!  We had a day jam packed with opportunities to explore new and exciting things.  We enjoyed our 1 hour program of learning about different materials and properties and watching how they changed when combining them with different liquids.  It also provided us a great opportunity to build our science skills and work with new and different materials and science tools, like beakers!  We also enjoyed having the opportunity to explore the many different exhibits and learning halls and areas throughout the Science Centre. 

  

Here are some of our highlights:

I liked going on the jungle gym two times - Emmett

I liked playing the Virtual Reality game - Luke, Owen

I liked going outside to play in the large playground area with Addie - Talysi

My highlight of the day was moving the rings rings to see how they would roll around - Eamon

I liked going down the big slide outside - Walker, Jack 

I liked playing the water piano and watching the bubbles - Presley

I liked watching the presentation with the dry ice - Olive 

Days like these are not possible without amazing parent volunteers.  We thank those who were able to join us, as well as other parents who offered their time as well.  We appreciate each and every one of you, and your time to help out with activities in our school.  Thank you for helping make our day and learning experiences a great success.  

Learning Intentions:

I can examine properties of objects.  

I can analyze properties of objects and investigate how they can be changed.

I can engage in and describe investigation.

  Dear Parents, I hope that everyone is enjoying the spring weather this long weekend!  Read below to hear about our week! Reminders: As a reminder, we will be going to the Leighton Art Centre on Monday April 22 for the whole day.   The Leighton Art Centre is located 30 mins outside the city limits.  The weather conditions are slightly different at the art centre compared to in the city.  Currently, there is still snow on the ground and temperatures are often cooler.  Please send your child dressed in layers(t-shirt, sweater, jacket), hat, mittens, jacket, and boots that will keep their feet warm and dry.  It is recommended that you pack an extra pair of socks and change of clothes in case it is needed.  As well, we will be active all day!  Please pack a sizeable snack, full leakproof water bottle, and lunch for your child.   Social Studies This week we have been building our background knowledge and learning about the founders...

This week was jam-packed with lots of exciting learning opportunities.  Here is a peek at some of the learning from this week.   Pink Shirt Day Needle Felting with Grade 6 Buddies We had the opportunity to work with our grade 6 buddies to build a beautiful representation of friendship and to mark Pink Shirt Day.  Thanks to our Student Voice who started this initiative, students in grade 1 and grade 6 partnered up to draw a heart, transfer it to felt square and then using roving wool and a felting needle created a quilted square that will be joined with others to create a friendship quilt.   Tea cher’s Pet Thank you to our amazing parent volunteers that were able to join us for this in-school experience.  Students investigated energy and built their understanding of direction, pathway, and speed of moving objects and animals. December 4-7 Math - Repeating Patterns

  For the last few weeks we have been building our understanding of patterns by looking at patterns and cycles found in our everyday life, creating our own patterns with different elements, extending and translating patterns using a variety of materials.  The following is a summary of the key ideas and concepts we have been learning. Learning Intentions I can recognize cycles encountered in daily routines and nature. I can identify the pattern core, up to four elements, in a cycle.
